    Somm Note

    Winemaker Notes

Bouquet: Fresh, ripe and intense berry fruit with hints of cinnamon, nutmeg and white pepper. Petit Verdot adds a spicy, dried floral note.

Palate: Full, rich, plummy Shiraz flavours with mocha flavours, balanced by black pepper. The spice notes and tannin edge of the Petit Verdot serve as complement to the roundness of Shiraz and the black fruit of Cabernet.

General: A rich textured style showing all the hallmarks of small yield, dry grown fruit. Though perfectly suitable for aging, Scrubby Rise red is a wine that's meant to be accessible and readily enjoyable, with just a bit of tannin, and Wirra Wirra's familiar balance and elegance. A great all-round crowd pleaser.

Serve: Cries out for your best barbecued ribs, chicken and even Chinese-spiced grilled shrimp. Full flavoured cheeses and all manner of savory bites are at home with this wine

Wirra Wirra McLaren Vale Vineyard Winery Image

Wirra Wirra Vineyards was originally established in 1894 by known South Australian eccentric and cricketer Robert Strangways Wigley. The winery prospered in its early days, producing many wines including a much acclaimed Shiraz, which was exported to England and the Empire until his death in 1926. The winery ran into disrepair and was eventually abandoned. In 1969 under the watchful eye of the late Greg Trott and his cousin Roger, the winery was rebuilt from the remnants of two walls and some slate fermenting tanks. As with all subsequent Trott endeavours, it was the sheer magnitude and unlikeliness of the project that made it so attractive.
