The nose on this bottling is immensely intriguing and unique, with gooseberry, grapefruit skin, wet river stone and the faintest whiff of Serrano chili. It's as racy as it can be on the sip, as the bright, fresh and grippy texture reveals flavors of underripe white peach, lime and tons of wet stone.

Fresh and juicy with silky consistency and dry flavors; lively, zesty, and long; a California version of Austria's prime variety.

COMMENTARY: Old World star or New World new on the horizon, Grüner Veltliner has generally remained an Austrian wine. The 2015 Zocher shows that this grape variety can flourish in the New World too. TASTING NOTES: This wine seems to be in-between worlds. Its aromas and flavors hint of the Old, but its overall lasting palate impression puts in the New. Pair its distinctive nuances with a savory tomato-less fish stew. (Tasted: May 15, 2018, San Francisco, CA)

Jack Niven, with his adventurous spirit, pioneered winegrape planting through Paragon Vineyard in the Edna Valley over forty years ago. His descendants have carried that same spirit forward by bringing in varietals that are unique, racy, and intriguing.
Being their riskiest venture yet, Zocker (the German word for gambler), has captured the essence of being unconventional. Grüner Veltliner is very rare domestically, but is truly one of the most food-friendly wines in the world. Though Riesling is not as rare, Zocker takes a unique approach to developing a new style. Both these wines bring an exciting and progressive approach to winemaking and wine drinking.
The risk paid off, as Zocker has been highly praised and recognized in wine competitions all around the world. We invite you to try this unique wine, it’s worth the gamble!
Fun to say and delightfully easy to drink, Grüner Veltliner calls Austria its homeland. While some easily quaffable Grüners come in a one-liter—a convenient size—many high caliber single vineyard bottlings can benefit from cellar aging. Somm Secret—About 75% of the world’s Grüner Veltliner comes from Austria but the variety is gaining ground in other countries, namely Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and the United States.
California’s coolest wine growing area, Edna Valley excels in the production of high quality Central Coast wines like Pinot noir, Chardonnay, Rhône Blends and aromatic white wines. It has a cool Mediterranean climate and an incredibly long growing season, giving late-ripening varieties plenty of opportunity to develop great phenolic complexity.
Its northwest to southeast orientation creates a direct path for cool Pacific air and fog to penetrate the valley from the Los Osos and Morro Bay area inwards. Low hillsides of both calcareous and volcanic soils are home to much of the vineyard acreage of the Edna Valley.
