Somm Note

Winemaker Notes

This is a blend of 90% Cabernet Franc with 7% Malbec and 3% Merlot all hand harvested from Gualtallary inside of the Uco Valley. The nose is filled with blackberry, kirsch, plum, vanilla, nutmeg, and leather. The palate is rich with coffee bean, star anise, mulberry, black olive, and baking spices. The wine is big and broad with ample tannin and a solid structure from 30 months in oak.

The one wine that is released much later is the 2013 Piantao, a Cabernet Franc-based blend with some 7% Malbec and 3% Merlot. It fermented in concrete and matured in oak barrels (90% of them third use and the rest new and larger, 500-liter ones) for some 30 months, hence the later release date. Somehow, I saw less oak here than in previous vintages, and even less than the 2014 Field Blend that I tasted next to it. The palate is medium-bodied, with a creamy texture, fine-grained tannins and a good finish.

A juicy and layered red with soft and chewy tannins, dark fruit and a floral finish. Full and flavorful. A blend of cab franc, malbec, cab sauvignon and syrah.
  • 90
A muscular style, with well-framed flavors of raspberry, red currant and plum that are filled with vibrant acidity. Firm tannins show on the finish, featuring notes of slate and spice. Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah.

Cabernet Franc, a proud parent of Cabernet Sauvignon, is the subtler and more delicate of the Cabernets. Today Cabernet Franc produces outstanding single varietal wines across the wine-producing world. Somm Secret—One of California's best-kept secrets is the Happy Canyon appellation of Santa Barbara. Here Cabernet Franc shines as a single varietal wine or in blends, expressing sumptuous fruit, savory aromas and polished tannins.

Uco Valley Wine

With a winning combination of cool weather, high elevation and well-draining alluvial soils, it is no surprise that Mendoza’s Uco Valley is one of the most exciting up-and-coming wine regions in Argentina. Healthy, easy-to-manage vines produce low yields of high-quality fruit, which in turn create flavorful, full-bodied wines with generous acidity.

This is the source of some of the best Malbec in Mendoza, which can range from value-priced to ultra-premium. Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Chardonnay also perform well here.
