Winemaker Notes

The 2019 Odette Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, Stags Leap District, offers notes of wild blackberry compote, sweet black raspberries, currants, crème de cassis, and licorice with hints of violets, cloves, anise, and exotic spices. This lavish, full-bodied wine is decadent and mouth-filling, with copious layers that stain the palate. Vibrant acidity adds freshness and verve, complementing the purity of the fruit and leading to a long persistent finish.

Blend: 84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Merlot, 6% Malbec, 2% Petit Verdot

A blend of 84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Merlot, 6% Malbec, and the rest Petit Verdot, the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate comes all from the cool Stags Leap District and was brought up mostly in new French oak. It’s a full-bodied, ripe, powerful 2019 that nevertheless stays balanced and weightless on the palate, with silky tannins and a rare level of polish and elegance. Giving up lots of pure cassis and blue fruits as well as notes of violets, underbrush, and high-class oak, it already offers pleasure yet is going to evolve gracefully for 20 years or more. If you’re looking for ripe, sexy, seamless, and impeccably made Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, look no further.

The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate is a blend of 84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Merlot, 6% Malbec and 2% Petit Verdot. Deep garnet-purple in color, is prances out of the glass with vibrant blackberries, redcurrant jelly and cassis notes with hints of mocha, Indian spices and bay leaves. Full-bodied with flamboyant black fruits and velvety tannins in the mouth, it has a refreshing backbone and long, spicy finish.

Odette Estate The Winery Winery Image

Tucked under the dramatic palisades of the Stags Leap District, right along Silverado Trail sits the newest member to the PlumpJack and CADE family, Odette Estate.

The Stags Leap District’s distinctive soils are famous for imparting unique characteristics to wines—including extraordinary power delivered with delicately articulated structure, varietal aromas and flavors. This strong, feminine personality recalls the charisma of Odette, a woman who appears throughout history, literature and dance. The name “Odette” even shows up in the wine world, at the infamous Paris Wine Tasting of 1976, in which a red wine from Stags Leap District took top honors over the French.

Odette's Winemaker Jeff Owens seeks to harness the strong character of the terroir in order to craft wines that are both bold and elegant. The estate is set on 45 acres, planted mainly to Cabernet Sauvignon.

A noble variety bestowed with both power and concentration, Cabernet Sauvignon enjoys success all over the globe, its best examples showing potential to age beautifully for decades. Cabernet Sauvignon flourishes in Bordeaux's Medoc where it is often blended with Merlot and smaller amounts of some combination of Cabernet Franc, Malbecand Petit Verdot. In the Napa Valley, ‘Cab’ is responsible for some of the world’s most prestigious, age-worthy and sought-after “cult” wines. Somm Secret—DNA profiling in 1997 revealed that Cabernet Sauvignon was born from a spontaneous crossing of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc in 17th century southwest France.

Legend has it that quick and nimble stags would escape the indigenous hunters of southern Napa Valley through the landmark palisades that sit just northeast of the current city of Napa. As a result, the area was given the name, Stags Leap. While its grape-growing history dates back to the mid-1800s, winemaking didn’t really take off until the mid-1970s after a small but pivotal blind tasting called the Judgement of Paris.

When a 1973 Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon won first place against its high-profile Bordeaux contenders, like Chateau Mouton Rothschild and Chateau Haut-Brion, international attention to the Stags Leap District of Napa Valley escalated rapidly.

The vineyards in this one-of-a-kind wine growing region receive hot afternoon air reflecting off of its eastern palisade formation. In combination with the cool evening breezes from the San Pablo Bay just south, this becomes an optimal environment for grape growing. While many varieties could thrive here, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot dominate with virtually no others, save for a spot or two of Syrah.

Stags Leap soils—eroded volcanic and old river sediments—encourage well established root systems and result in complex, terroir-driven wines. Stags Leap District reds have a distinct sour cherry and black berry character with baking spice and dried earth aromas, and supple tannins.
