Winemaker Notes

Ruby-red colored wine tending to violet-purple. Soft fruit aroma with a prevalence of plum and morello cherry. Well balanced, full in body and with a lingering finish.

Aromas of black fruit and berries, dried herbs and moss. Medium-to full-bodied with slightly firm tannins. Juicy, with sweet berries and more herbs and earth on the finish.

Violet pastille hints lift dusty florals, lavender and crushed plums as the 2020 Aglianico del Vulture Teodosio opens in the glass. This is soft textured with a wave of tart blackberries and currants underscored by grippy minerality. A web of fine tannins lingers through the youthfully tension finale, as the 2020 finishes structured yet with a mentholated freshness.

The certified organic Basilisco 2020 Aglianico del Vulture Teodosio opens to a pretty dark appearance and lovely aromatic intensity that most prizes rich primary fruit with dark berry and black plum. Those dark tones are heavily amplified by sensations of volcanic lava and shiny silica. The mouthfeel is sharp and quite chiseled, and this too reinforces the volcanic personality of the wine.

Basilisco, Italy
Basilisco Winery Video
Basilisco, as it is known today, was founded in 1992, and was acquired in 2010 by Feudi di San Gregorio. Basilisco’s wines are grown biodynamically on 20 hectares. The vineyards are located in Barile, which sits 450-600 meters above sea level, facing southeast. Vinification and storage occurs inside 8 caves that were created in the 15th Century by Albanian refugees who were fleeing the Turks. The caves face north and have a temperature of 16-18 °C, making them ideal for storing and preserving wine and olive oil. Basilisco wines are born on Vulture’s volcanic slopes where old vineyards alternate fruit and olive groves creating a landscape of extraordinary beauty. As in the past, Basilisco’s wines are vinified and set to rest inside the caverns within the volcano.

Making its home in the mountainous southern Italy, Aglianico is a bold red variety that is late to ripen and often spends until November on the vine. It thrives in Campania as the exclusive variety in the age-worthy red wine called Taurasi. Aglianico also has great success in the volcanic soils of Basilicata where it makes the robust, Aglianico del Vulture. Somm Secret—The name “Aglianico” bears striking resemblance to Ellenico, the Italian word for "Greek," but no evidence shows it has Greek ancestry. However, it first appeared in Italy around an ancient Greek colony located in present-day Avellino, Campania.

Inhabiting the arch of Italy’s boot, this southern, mountainous region has a relatively small amount of vineyard area under vine. Basilicata has one DOCG for its prized red grape, Aglianico, Aglianico del Vulture Superior, which is limited to the slopes of an extinct volcano. The best whites are made of Malvasia bianca.
